De ontwikkeling van de projectmanagementmethodiek PRINCE® (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is in 1989 gestart door CCTA (the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) in Engeland. In 1996 is de methodiek verbeterd en uitgebouwd tot PRINCE2®. Hierna is de methode op basis van brede internationale praktijkervaring steeds verder verbeterd. De laatste versie is in 2009 uitgebracht.
